High potential and gifted education

At Tomerong Public School, every learner’s potential is our priority. We recognise that many students have high potential, and we are dedicated to helping that potential grow into something powerful. Our teachers actively identify and nurture each student’s strengths, supporting them to be the best they can be.

We are committed to developing high potential across four key domains: creative, intellectual, physical, and social-emotional. Every day, we challenge our students to think critically, create boldly, lead confidently, and grow personally.

Our school is a place of diversity and opportunity, where every learner belongs. We foster a culture of high expectations and equity in excellence, ensuring that every student—regardless of background—has access to opportunities that help transform their potential into talent.

We offer a variety of supports and opportunities designed specifically to meet the needs of high potential and gifted students, ensuring they are inspired, challenged, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Tomerong Public School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential grow into something powerful.

  • Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
  • Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
  • Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals and self-assessment.
  • Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Across our school

Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.

  • Students strengthen their skills through debating, mathematical enrichment, STEM activities, and creative writing groups that foster critical thinking and innovation.
  • Talent is celebrated through participation in events like the Shoalhaven Eisteddfod, Shoalhaven Choral Music Festival, Southern Stars, school performances and visual arts.
  • Leadership develops through SRC, and Student Advisory Group, while wellbeing is supported by dedicated staff and programs.
  • Daily school life encourages curiosity and connection with access to clubs, creative spaces, and opportunities to engage in diverse interests.
  • Sport is valued through PSSA competitions, training, coaching, and inclusive physical education programs that promote teamwork and fitness.
Across NSW

Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.

  • The Premier’s Spelling Bee promotes our students’ vocabulary development and attention to detail in competitive settings.
  • The Premier’s Debating Challenge helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.
  • The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA and CHSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
  • Students practise their public speaking skills and improve their confidence while exploring ideas of multiculturalism with the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition.
  • The Department of Education Write On competition allows students to develop skills in writing to express their ideas and gives them a chance to become published authors.
  • Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.
